Week at a Glance & Important Tid Bits....

We are now into our third week of Advent.  The children have been preparing their hearts and patiently waiting for Jesus' birthday to arrive.  With that, there are many celebrations happening with in our school....

Wednesday December 16 is Pyjama Day for grades K-6.  We look forward to all dressing in their finest p.j. attire ;)

Also on Wednesday December 16 is the day of our Kinder Concert.  We will begin promptly at 1:30 in the gym.  We will then continue our Christmas celebration in the classroom building Gingerbread Houses. We invite all (Grandma's, Grandpa's, siblings) to our concert. However, we do ask that only mom's and dad's come along to the class to assist with the gingerbread houses.  Space in the classroom will be squishy!

God Bless!

The Christmas Story

Mrs. Val shared this with me and now I can't stop watching.  A beautiful view of the Christmas story through the eyes of children.  Enjoy

The Nativity

We are recreating the Nativity Scene in our dramatic play area.  If you have anything at home that could help us, please send it in.  We are looking for angel wings and white gown, a brown pillow case (for Joseph to wear), and larger tea towels for shepherds to wear, outfits for 3 kings too!

Many thanks for your help.
Happy Holidays!

Let's give this Christmas Season...

December 1, 2015

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Advent season has arrived and Christmas is just around the corner. Each of the classes at St. Gabriel School will be involved in our Advent project to help those in need. Each class, from Kindergarten through grade six, will contribute to allow us to prepare a “hamper” for 17 families from our adopted school.

Each student is being asked to bring in a specific item for the food hamper. Kinders in room 153 have been asked to donate 2 adult toothbrushes. If you are able, a donation of $2.00 for the family would also be most appreciated. Monies collected will go towards the purchase of a grocery store gift card for each family, so the family can purchase a turkey and fresh fruit and vegetables. New this year, we are also asking for donations of Canadian Tire money which will be used to purchase gifts for the families.

We encourage the students to complete a chore at home to earn their own money, so that they experience the gift of giving. Your child is invited to bring in a bottle of HONEY. We will be collecting the hamper items and money from Wednesday, December 3rd until Thursday, December 10th.

** Please note we also welcome donations of hats and mittens to send to families in need in our school board.

Thank you for your generosity and support during the Advent Season.

God Bless,
St. Gabriel Catholic School Staff

Hats, Mitts and Boots....

Now that winter is here (at least for today), we we would like to send out a gentle reminder to please label all hats, mitts, scarves and boots.  Today, 2 children who left school in their indoor shoes because another child wore their boots home.  Our little kiddos do not recognize their things - labels help teachers make sure student's belongings go home each day.

Parent Teacher Interviews Next Week: Online Booking System

Next Wednesday and Thursday night, we will be hosting parent teacher interviews in room 154
(Mme. McCann/Ms. Masoumeh's homeroom) and in room 153 ( Mrs. Bean's/ Ms. Val's homeroom). The process of booking interviews will be online and more information will be posted as it becomes available.

We would like to inform you that interviews for your child will be with your child's homeroom teacher and ECE only.  If you would like to speak to your child's other teacher ( Mrs. Bean for room 154) or (Mme. McCann for room 153), please kindly write a note to request a telephone interview in your child's communication book.

Please be aware that your child's class has 30 students. We are trying to ensure that each child's parents or guardians, if requested, gets allotted a time with their homeroom teacher and ECE. These are ten minute slots.  If Mme. McCann or Mrs. Bean have to also make telephone interviews for their other classroom, it becomes more than 30 interviews that they have to proceed with. We are a team that collaborates and communicates together in regards to your child's progress. Your interview with your child's educators will be based on observations from all educators involved. :)

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter,
Mme. McCann, Ms. Masoumeh, Mrs. Bean, Ms. Val

Fun with Maps

Hi There,

The kinders have shown a great interest in maps.  As a class, we were hoping to "pin" our home addresses on a map on Kanata and search our home addresses and school on Google Earth.  Please write your home address in your child's Communication Book if you give permission to use your address throughout our investigation.

Many Thanks!

Lockdown Practice and Upcoming Drill

Hello Parents,
Just as is the case of fire drills, we are mandated to have "lock down" practices in our school. In anticipation of a school-wide lock down practice, we will be reviewing this practice this week. We will be explaining the need for a  lock down practice in age appropriate terms. In the case of bad weather or a frightened animal accidentally entering our school, we need to go to a safe place. This safe area is our cubby area in our classroom. We need to be ever so quiet so that the scared skunk or raccoon doesn't know were are in the classroom!! If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us.

Mme. McCann, Ms. Masoumeh, Mrs. Bean & Ms, Val

Picture Forms due from Carpe Diem on Thursday

Just a friendly reminder that picture forms are due this Thursday, November 12th. We have not established a picture retake day as of yet. More will be posted soon.

Bus Evacuation Practice Drill

Today the students at St. Gabriel practiced a new safety drill.  We practiced how to safely evacuate a bus in case of an emergency like a flat tire or small accident.  Students all boarded a bus and practiced how to evacuate a bus from both the front and back doors of the bus. In both drills the students did a great job listening and following directions!  Way to go, Kinders!!

Patterns at Home

In class we have been learning about repeating patterns, such as the following...

ABABABABAB

We have been describing, creating and extending patterns.  We have also been identifying the core of the pattern (the part of the pattern that repeats). In the example above, the core is composed of the A and B, and the core repeats 4 times.

Patterns can be created in a variety of ways. Using different objects (e.g. forks and spoons), different shapes (e.g. circles and squares), different colours (e.g. red and blue), or different sizes (e.g. large and small).

Explore some simple patterns with your child.  Create a simple repeating pattern, using two kinds of household objects.  Ask your child to read the pattern aloud by pointing to and naming each object in the pattern (e.g. "spoon, fork, spoon, fork, and so on).  Ask your child to explain what comes next in the pattern and have him or her extend the pattern using more of the two objects chosen.

Next have your child create a pattern (e.g. blue sock, blue sock, white sock, blue sock, blue sock, white sock, and so on). Ask your child to read the pattern aloud, and to extend tha pattern by adding a few more objects.

Have your child draw a picture of a pattern you explored together.  If the pattern involves colour, ask your child to colour the objects in the picture.  Have your child bring the drawing to school, so that it can be shared with the class.

Have fun exploring patterns!!!

We visit the Learning Commons tomorrow

The kinders are visiting the Learning Commons tomorrow and will be borrowing a new book. If you have not sent in your child's book, please do so tomorrow! 😀

Can you lend a hand?

Hello! We are looking for volunteers to accompany the  kinders (and teachers) to the Symphany Retirement home. We will be walking there to share a special activity with the residents there. We will arrive there for 10:00 on November 24th. If you are interested in joining us please jot a note in your child's mailbag. It promises to be a very rewarding experience.

Also, I'm looking for one special person who would like to help with the scholastic program. I'm hoping to have a special someone to date and  put together the flyers that are sent home to the students. It would most likely require 30-40 minutes once a month as you watch your favourite program. If you can help please let me know!!!

Many Thanks
