Double Lunch Day - This Wednesday!
St. Gabriel Catholic School

Tel: (613) 271-6181
E-Mail: Gabriel@ottawacatholicschools.ca
Dear Families,
Welcome to our Double Lunch Day Initiative. St. Gabriel is hoping to help those less fortunate in our community. We are joining together to help The Ottawa Mission by providing lunches for their back-to-work and back-to-school programs. We have designated Wednesday, Nov. 16, Wednesday, Feb. 8, and Wednesday, May 3 to bring in a second lunch. These lunches not only help many valuable members of our society, but they also lessen the load of The Ottawa Mission.
How can you participate?
The first Double Lunch Day for St. Gabriel School will be on Wednesday, November 16. On this day, we ask that you send your child to school with an additional lunch. The lunches can have perishable and non-perishable items. We ask that they are healthy lunches and that they be packed in a bag that will travel to The Ottawa Mission (brown bag, Ziploc bag, etc.). Please do not include mayonnaise on the sandwiches. Feel free to include a thoughtful, spiritual message and/or a hand drawn picture that will be collected separately and sent in a separate special container. The lunches will be transported to The Ottawa Mission shortly after being collected in the morning. Upon their arrival at The Mission, the lunches will be distributed to the various programs in need. Please see their website for further information http://www.ottawamission.com/
The Mission is also in need of a few additional items:
-winter clothing suitable for adult males (gloves, hats, etc)
-socks
Your support in this initiative is truly appreciated by the patrons of The Ottawa Mission. The staff also send their thanks. If you have any questions about the Double Lunch Days please feel free to contact us at the school.
Sincerely,
The St. Gabriel Double Lunch Day Committee

Roots of Empathy
The Kinders in Room 153 are so fortunate to have the Roots of Empathy program being implemented into our program. Ms. Val will be leading myself and the students through this learning journey. Mrs. Swan (a teacher at St. Gabriel School) and her son, Oliver will be joining us once a month throughout our school year. I look forward to learning along with the children!

Meet Baby Oliver
Mrs. Swan, Ms. Val, Baby Oliver and the Kinders gather around the green Roots of Empathy blanket.
What can Baby Oliver do?
Before meeting Baby Oliver, the Kinders took a survey. Will Baby Oliver be smaller, bigger or the same size as Baby Michael (our Roots of Empathy Doll)

Comparing Baby Michael's size to Baby Oliver. It's pretty close!!!

It was a soggy Friday
We had many soggy friends in kindergarten today. The wet snow left kiddos with wet socks and pants. A gentle reminder for students to please come to school wearing rain/snow boots if there has been a rain or snow fall. Also, splash pants/snow pants also help to keep everyone dry. Mittens and hats should also be worn. We spend a lot of our day outside and want to be sure all students are comfortable, warm and dry.
Thank You!!

Pumpkins!
Thought I'd share a poem we have been working on. This poem has been giving us a lot of learning opportunity. We have been talking about "describing" words. We have practiced describing pumpkins in our classroom using words like: bumpy, smooth, orange, white, big, small, and stem. We have also searched for the popcorn (words that pop up everywhere) 'I'. Lastly, the students have been having fun tracking the words (using a pointer to follow the words as they read) while using pointers during learning centre time.
Play For Change - Friday!
The grade 6's at St. Gabe have organized a fun annual event. Play For Change is back! The 6's have worked hard and have created/organized games for students to play in exchange for coin donation. The money raised will help support aboriginal education, CHEO and students in Haiti.

Pumpkins
With fall upon us, we have brought many signs of fall into our classrooms. Pumpkins, gourds, leaves, and branches. We have been using all of these treasures found outside in our classroom for art, measuring, exploring and building. Above is a picture of a poem we are learning. We spoke about the describing words we use to talk about the pumpkins.
The Beaver Pond
Do you know what this is?
An Inkpot mushroom. Skunks and squirrels like to munch on these!
A worm on a rainy day.
"The plants are sucking the water from my hand. I'm helping them."
We learnt the word 'canopy' today. We all stopped the listen to the rain falling on top of the tree.
We called it nature's music. It was beautiful.
Another neat mushroom that reminded us of a stingray.
We had a friend come say hi. We discovered that this is a mommy Mallard Duck. She is brown in colour so she can camouflage in the marshes and protect her ducklings. We also took notice to her webbed feet.
Can you see the Blue Heron in the photo?
It's hard to see, but there was a beaver (possibly a muskrat) swimming and splashing in the water!
Our gang!! Thank you to all the moms and dads who could join us today. We look forward to next time!!
